He Obeyed…

Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

The key words to our verse today are faith and obedience. Abraham received a word from God and it told him to go to a place he knew nothing about. It put him in a place where he had to make a decision that would forever change his  life.  Have you ever been in such a place of decision? Nancy and I have been there at various times in our lives. It has never been easy to make those types of decisions but the Lord has blessed us as we have tried to follow Him.

In those times of decision, we need to know that we are truly hearing the voice of God. There are so many voices that bid us come or go. Abraham it seems knew the voice of God. He did not question the voice but responded. For you and me one of the most difficult decisions we make is making sure we are listening to the voice of God and not to the voices of the world around us. That is a topic for another blog post. For now let us just say that we need to make sure that what we are hearing is the voice of God. By faith Abraham accepted that he was hearing the voice of God.

Now that Abraham had accepted that God was calling out to him, he had to decide to take action or stay where he was.  It was I am sure a difficult decision. Listen to the command of God: Genesis 12:1 "Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:"  Abraham was to leave the homeland, with which he was familiar, and he was to move away from his relatives. Even more he was to go where God showed him. He was to go to a place he knew nothing about. Would you be willing to obey such a command?

When God messes with our security, it makes our decisions difficult. Abraham looked at all the circumstances and he obeyed God. By faith he made the move. We can see the blessings of his obedience. We also when we hear the call to make extreme changes in our lives need to determine for sure that what we are hearing is the voice of God.

Once that is done, we need to exercise our faith to obey. Obedience unlocks the blessing of God. Obedience may lead us into unfamiliar places but with God guiding us we do not need to be afraid. Faith and obedience need to guide our lives.

Keep Looking Up,

Dan
