Our Nation Has Forgotten God!

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, the many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to God that made us It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.

President Abraham Lincoln’s Proclamation for a National Day of Fasting,  Humiliation and Prayer, April 30, 1863

I would like to again look at the quote from yesterdays post from Abraham Lincoln.  it was given in a proclamation for a National Day of fasting, April 30, 1863.  Yesterday we talked about the sentence, “But we have forgotten God”.  Today I would like to look at the phrase that begins the next sentence, “We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us…”

President Lincoln recognized that it is not the work of men that made the United States a great nation.  It is the hand of God that preserved our peace and increased our wealth.  It is the hand of God that has strengthened us.  In the maze of confusion that has gripped our nation today, we must again acknowledge that it is God who has brought us blessing.  It is not enough to merely read his word but we must put back into practice his principles.  Lincoln declared “…we have become to self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace. too proud to pray to God that made us…”.  Once again our president needs to proclaim a national day of prayer and fasting that we can regain the peace and blessing that has escaped us!
