Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?

Mat 1:18-23 KJV – 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

It is sixteen days until we celebrate Christmas Day! It hardly seems possible that the year has brought us to this point. We have all the trimmings of Christmas at our house. We have the Christmas tree up(actually two, one big one and one small one.) and a variety of other decorations.

But these as much as we enjoy them are not the real meaning of Christmas Day. The real meaning is found in the verses we have chosen for today.

Christmas is our celebration of a Savior who was born of a virgin and called Emmanuel, which means God with us. The joy of Christmas is that God loves you and me so much that He worked a miracle to set us free from our sins.

The hope of the babe born in Bethlehem is the reason we celebrate! Christmas for so many is only a time to treat those around them better and to give gifts to family and friends.

Christmas is so much more than that! It is the truth that the angel spoke to Joseph.

I celebrate Christmas because I know that Jesus is my Savior and I am forgiven of my sins. Because of the birth of Jesus Christ I have been set free!

Keep Looking Up,

Dan
