First Love, Lost…

Rev.2: 4-5 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

The letter to the church at Ephesus in the book of Revelation contains probably one of the best known verses in the Bible. God speaks through His writer about a church that has many good traits but has one great fault. Inspite of all its actions, it has lost its original zeal and love for God Himself. The declaration of this verse brings to our minds the truth of the scripture that states:

Eph 2: 8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

All of the works accomplished by the Ephesus church did not satisfy the heart of God. He wanted them to return to their first love of relationship with Him. If they did not redo their first works God indicates that they would lose their place with Him.

It raises an important question for you and me. With all of our efforts to please God by our work in the church and our communities, have we forgotten our beginnings with God. The sweetness of new deliverance and the freedom from sin.  How much we hungered for more of God's presence and power in those early days of salvation. Our greatest desires were to please him and no sacrifice was too great. However, as time has passed, have we  maintained that desire and closeness to God? Has complacency and familiarity replaced that zeal that once was the main force in our hearts? Like the church at Ephesus, we need to make sure that we have not left our First Love!

Keep Looking Up!
