Let Us Not Forget !

In a speech made in 1863, Abraham Lincoln said, “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown.  But we have forgotten God.  We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.  Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.” (Source: sermoncentral.com , Illustration  contributed by Jeff Simms)

We need to remember that all we have is not of our own abilities.  We did not create the earth and we did not build this great nation in which we live without the hand of God being on us.  It is so easy to get caught up in our own success that we do not remember our foundations.  As the scripture teaches a house without a foundation cannot stand.  The key to Abraham Lincoln’s speech is the sentence “We have forgotten God.”  If that was true in 1863, how much more is it true today!  The struggles we see in our nation, I believe, are the result of the rejection of the foundations that made us great.  Because of the actions of our government and our individual citizens it has come into question whether we are “One Nation Under God”.  But if not under God, who is our protector and provider?

Let us do some remembering and let us return to the safety of being in the “Shadow of the Almighty”!  Without Him our future is in jeopardy!  Just some thoughts and concerns from my heart.

Keep Looking Up!
