The Peril of Many Voices

John 1:23 John replied in the words of Isaiah, “I am a a voice shouting in the wilderness. ‘Prepare a straight pathway for the Lord’s coming’!”

John the Baptist is one of the unique individuals in scripture. He is the one sent to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus. His voice rings loud and clear concerning the soon coming Messiah. His message is clear and direct. However, his was not the only voice ringing out a message in Israel. Many false prophets declared their own version of what was ahead for the nation and many who heard John’s clear message chose not to follow but were led away from the Messiah by false voices who seemed to have an easier way.

It is not really any different in our day.  In addition to the voices of friends and relatives we have voices that come to us by television, radio, cell phones, etc. There is an unending proliferation of noise that bombards us every day. If we are not careful to govern the voices that enter our lives, confusion begins to reign.

The scripture tells us that God has sent us His Holy Spirit to dwell in us. He is there to teach us and show us the way that God wants us to travel in this life. The question is how can I know that voice? It is really not as hard as you might think. We have a clear word by which we can judge the voices that we hear. It is called the Bible. The Bible is the inspired word of God and its truth helps us discern the  difference between the many voices in our world that seem to speak the truth. However many of them are like the false prophets of John’s day.  Use the Bible as your foundation. If the voices you hear do not agree with the inspired word of God. They will only bring confusion into your life.
